What is an Earth Explore Adventure for Teachers ?

Our Adventures immerse teachers in the same kind of outdoor and environmental education curriculum offered on our student programs.  However, for teachers our focus is on enrichment and professional development. Educators get to travel and network with their colleagues from throughout the nation.  This educational cross-pollination helps to share ideas, develop new and innovative classroom teaching methods, and improved curriculum.

Who can travel on Earth Explore's teacher programs ?

Any current or past certified classroom teacher, as well as friends, colleagues and spouses who share the same interests.  Our goal is for a dynamic group of lifelong educators who take their energy and enthusiasm with them into their classrooms and other educational venues upon their return.

How do we travel?

On Earth Explore Adventures all ground transportation is by chartered motorcoach, cruise ship or rail line.  On the Hawaii Adventure we travel by motorcoach and reef catamaran.

What are the hotels like ?

Hotels are generally three star deluxe accommodations on all of our teacher programs.  In some cases we use university accommodations.  Lodging is double occupancy so each teacher will be paired with a teacher of the same gender.  In the case of friends or spouses traveling together, those participants will be roomed together.  The single supplement charge is $500.

Can multiple teachers from a school travel together ?

Yes, as long as there is space in the group.  We do encourage teachers from the same or neighboring schools to travel together, as the bonding and curriculum development benefits are enormous.

Can my school form its own group?

Yes.   Many teachers choose to register together and travel together.   Teachers may form a full or partial group from their own school (or district) provided there is space in the Adventure they choose at the time of group formation.

What are the dates?

Dates are listed on the Adventure for Teachers program page, and on the Fact Sheet.  Dates are chosen to maximize the resources available at the Adventure destination, as well as avoiding conflicts with the summer schedules of the majority of interested teachers.

What are the activities like?

The mission of the Earth Explore Foundation is to encourage teacher and student connection with the natural world.  At all times, our focus is hands-on learning and active adventure. That means our participants don’t sit on the sidelines, but dive in. Depending on the program, they may be sighting whales, hiking mountain trails for a view of Denali, taking part in a wildlife viewing safari, kayaking, exploring ocean tide pools or coral reefs, sketching calving glaciers from the deck of a cruise ship, or taking part in interactive cultural programs.

How does airfare work?

Airfare is the responsibility of each participant.  Earth Explore will book air travel as a courtesy for groups of 10 or more, by request.  For other participants, booking air transportation to the gateway city is their own responsibility.  We require that participants arrive at a reasonable time (usually before 6PM) on the first day of the program.

Is there pre-travel preparation?

Yes. Earth Explore provides study materials for teachers, as well as a Travel Kit including detailed itinerary, program cap, photo credentials, program apparel, luggage tags and field journal.

Do you offer academic credit?

All of our programs offer credit at the graduate level for participating teachers.   Find out more about our credit program here.

Who is the Travel Manager?

This person is an additional staff member who is charged with handling all program logistics on-site during the Adventure. This includes hotel check-in and checkout, coordination with program locations and venues, trouble shooting and some guiding activities. This person's duties are in addition to the resource professionals at various venues.

Can I travel with a friend or colleague?

Yes. However, this depends upon whether your Earth Explore Adventure for Teachers has reached capacity by the time that friend contacts us.  Space on the program is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
