Trip Details:
Day 1 Our adventure begins in Billings, where we have lunch upon arrival and transfer to Pompey's Pillar, a famous site on the Lewis and Clark Trail. This afternoon we journey south to Cody for check-in, dinner and attendance at the Cody Stampede Rodeo.
Day 2 At the Buffalo Bill Historical Center the West comes alive. We dive into hands-on history and learn about the plains Indian culture. This afternoon prepare to get wet as we raft the red rock canyon of the Shoshone River, and hear tales of life along the river. Shopping and the “Cody shootout” tonight.
Day 3 Early departure for Thermopolis. At the Wyoming Dinosaur Center our students have access to a rich bone bed where fossils were buried along an ancient stream. We carefully unearth Jurassic-era dinosaur bones and go behind the scenes in the fossil lab, preparing our own fossil casts. Afternoon departure for Cody, with a top at the Legend Rock petrogylphs, time permitting.
Day 4 After breakfast we leave Cody for the high mountains, traveling the scenic Chief Joseph Highway. Upon arrival at Hunter Peak Ranch, we split into teams for horseback riding and games. Evening campfire dinner under the stars.
Day 5 A full day enjoying the ranch and the high country scenery. Horseback rides, volleyball, fishing, and scenic hikes are planned.
Day 6 On this amazing day we meet our Yellowstone Institute guides at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. We visit Old Faithful, and walk among hot springs, mudpots, fumeroles and other volcanic wonders. We end the day with dinner and cabin check-in at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Day 7 From bison to wolves, grizzly to moose, this day is dedicated to Yellowstone's animals. In the Lamar Valley we set up scopes to view bison, talk about the park's wolf packs, and perhaps view a grizzly. Hikes explore the Yellowstone Ecosystem. Free time and shopping in Mammoth Hot Springs, and final night dinner party.
Day 8 An early departure for Bozeman allows a program at the Museum of the Rockies. Then we board our flights for the return home.
